When Miriam fell off the horse aged 6, she couldn’t turn the page of her book about ponies so I helped her. When she broke her ankle very badly the other day there was the Atlantic Ocean between us but I got on the plane to help just the same. She’s good at reading now, but with her immobile and needing to rest, I’ve had time to read many books on my Kindle, this week. They haven’t been particularly great – War Hawk by James Rollins was probably the best – but spending precious time with the patient was all the more enjoyable with the added company of a good book.
