Tools of the Trade is an anthology of short, punchy, accessible poems for new doctors published by the wonderful Scottish Poetry Library. Every new doctor in Scotland has been gifted a copy of this book since 2014. We believe that it will help them stay compassionate and focussed on the patient as well as the illness at a time when they assume the big responsibility of being a doctor. We issued a second edition this year which led to a sell out session at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August. The sections cover looking after yourself, looking after others, beginning, being with illness and endings.
Reaction from young doctors has been very positive but it has also been nice to find out that many non medical people enjoy the poems as well!
