Claire – Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres

A8565B08-FC65-43B9-B851-9AF65489EE5FI normally loathe books which are awarded ‘famed’ literary prizes, but I make an exception for Louis de Bernières.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin has survived multiple house moves and travels but it is a book I adore. Set against the backdrop of World War II on the Greek island of Cephalonia, Captain Antonio Corelli arrives as part of the occupying forces and falls in love with the doctor’s daughter Pelagia who is engaged to Mandras, fighting as part of the Greek resistance.

Exploring the futility of war through stories of occupation, resistance, tragedy and unrequited love, no matter how many times I read this book, I still laugh and cry in equal measure.
