I read this book after coming across Simon’s TED talk from 2009 on ‘How great leaders inspire action’. Projects and change programmes can become unhelpfully preoccupied with ‘what’ and ‘how’. This book explains how it ‘feels different’ when we take time to focus on why. ‘Start with Why’ is packed with examples of the benefits of taking time to stop and consider actions and decisions through this lens. The links to various emotional, interpersonal and organisational processes are obvious – though are made more compelling when linked through the ‘Why’ golden thread throughout this book. Books are most powerful when they enlighten, empower and energise – this one did all three in equal measure for me.
