Caroline – Bellefleur by Joyce Carol Oates

20160809_201715-001When I was 15, my mother found Bellefleur in the library. We read it, we loved it, we told everyone we knew to read it.

This book blew my teenage mind with its scale, colour and characters. Images of cats and bears and shit and maggots, of rambling buildings and beautiful women and eccentric toffs imprinted themselves on my mind. They are still there. When I picked it up again recently my mind was blown again: the first sentence is 17 exquisite lines long. It leaves you breathless.
