Mark – Maggie and Me by Damian Barr

IMG_8079Maggie and Me by Damian Barr was the first book that I downloaded to a Kindle. After succumbing to the (now cherished) device, I remember the feeling of impish freedom of nobody else knowing what I was reading (a feeling much more exciting than the reality). With this in mind, I browsed the electronic ‘gay’ section – something that I wouldn’t have done in Waterstones back then, and that’s partly why I love this book. It explores the struggles of growing up a gay man in a working class estate under the Thatcher Government – it was my story. Only told in a brilliantly funny, moving, and entirely relateable way. Oh, and like all good stories, it stars an Evil Queen…
